Bimetallic Nanocrystals: Syntheses, Properties, and Applications

Abstract: Achieving mastery over the synthesis of metal nanocrystals has emerged as one of the foremost scientific endeavors in recent years. This intense interest stems from the fact that the composition, size, and shape of nanocrystals not only define their overall physicochemical properties but also determine their effectiveness in technologically important applications. Our aim is to present a comprehensive review of recent research activities on bimetallic nanocrystals. We begin with a brief introduction to the arc… Show more

“…The reduction potential of Au III (φHAuCl 4 /Au, +0.99 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode) 41 is higher than that of Rh III (φRhCl 3 /Rh, +0.76 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode). 42 Thus the HAuCl 4 precursor may be reduced preferentially to generate Au nanocrystals during the synthesis that will subsequently act as the cores for the growth of the Rh shells. …”

“…The marriage of two metals can endorse both a geometric effect and an electronic effect. The geometric effect refers to the generation of a new catalytic active site due to the combination of two metals [88]. The electronic structure can be altered due to the formation of the hetero-metal-metal bond, which can be favorable for catalytic reaction [88].…”

“…The geometric effect refers to the generation of a new catalytic active site due to the combination of two metals [88]. The electronic structure can be altered due to the formation of the hetero-metal-metal bond, which can be favorable for catalytic reaction [88]. Furthermore, specifically for ORR, the combination of two metals can tune the adsorption capability of oxygen molecules.…”

“…Many options are now available in the literature for the preparation of shape-controlled metal nanoparticles [5,[17][18][19][20], most of them based on the chemical reduction of a metallic precursor in the presence of a capping agent. Although other experimental parameters such as electrolyte, temperature, reducing time, nature of the reducing agent and others may also affect, the role of the capping agent is extremely important because it modifies the surface energies of the nanoparticles during their nucleation and growth steps thus overcoming the thermodynamic limitations and allowing metal nanoparticles with a particular shape to be obtained.…”
