BIM-GIS Integration as Dedicated and Independent Course for Geoinformatics Students: Merits, Challenges, and Ways Forward

Abstract: Information mined from building information models as well as associated geographical data and Geographic Information System (GIS) analyses can increase the success of construction processes and asset management, including buildings, roads, and public facilities. The integration of information from both domains requires high expertise in both spheres. The existing B.Sc and M.Sc. programs linked to the built environment at the Technical University of Munich offer courses for the Building Information Model (BIM)… Show more

“…The integration of BIM and GIS is currently the subject of intense research and development efforts in academia as well as in industry, and it has also found its way into university teaching and professional training courses (Hijazi et al 2018;Noardo et al 2019).…”

“…Some initiatives are being developed to fill this gap: e.g. the introduction of the GeoBIM topic in MSc courses in Geomatics (Hijazi et al 2018, Noardo et al 2019; projects involving NMCAs (like the EuroSDR GeoBIM project); the discussion about this topic in practice-oriented conferences, for example, the 'GEOdesign+BIM' conference by Geospatial Media and Communications (https://geo-bim.org/europe/) and more. Cooperation is also being established between software vendors in the BIM-domain and the geodata domain to increase the interoperability between their systems.…”

“…The main challenge with BIM and GIS integration comes from the conversion of geometric information between BIM and GIS [14,15]. On the BIM side, the representative Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard uses multiple methods to represent three-dimensional (3D) objects, including boundary representation (B-Rep), swept solid, constructive solid geometry (CSG), clipping, mapped representation, and, in some cases, surface model [16].…”
