Bile secretion in the fistulated pig : effect of the method used for bile reinfusion

Abstract: Summary. The aim of this work was to investigate the effects on bile secretion of flow rate and site of reinfusion of the collected bile to the animal. Thirty-two pigs weighing 50 ± 3 kg at the beginning of the experiment were fitted with a reentrant fistula in the lower common bile duct and in the upper duodenum. Bile collected from the bile duct was reinfused in four different ways (four groups of 8 animals each) : into the duodenum or the lower common bile duct at a constant flow rate using a peristaltic pu… Show more

“…The daily secretion of 282-555 g BA was equivalent to 2.3-4.6 gldaylkg BWT0.75, which is in accordance with sheep data, 3-5 gldaylkg BWT'.7S (Caple & Heath, 1972;Noble, 1978) and pig data, 3-5 g/day/kg BWT".75 (Juste et al, 1983a;. The lower BA secretion for the fish oil diets indicates th3t less BA were secreted when more unsaturated FA were fed, as also found in calves (Jenkins et al, 1988).…”

“…According to Ashkin et al (1978) and Laplace and Ouaissi (1977), exclusion of the sphincter of Oddi from the biliary pathway may perturb the physiology of bile secretion and even inhibit the functioning of the gallbladder (Laplace, 1976). Contrary to findings reported by Laplace and Ouaissi (1977), it was shown in a recent study in the pig (Juste, Corring and Le Coz, 1983b) Biliary surgical procedure. ― An extension of the method described previously was used (Juste, Corring and Breant, 1979).…”

“…weight. In the current study, pigs secreted 47 mL per 24-hr period per kg body weight, which compares with other values reported for pigs: 47 , 51 (Juste et al, 1983a), and 70 (Juste et al, 1983b).…”

“…reported that 47-kg pigs secreted 2,100 mL over 24 hours (87.5 mL/hr). Juste et al (1983a) found that 50kg pigs secreted an average of 2,570 mL over 24 hr (107 mL/hr) during a 6day period of bile collection and re-infusion. Juste et al, (1983b) reported average bile secretion of 87 mL/hr from 30-kg pigs during a 6-day collection period.…”
