New heteroleptic oxovanadium(V) chloro oximato complexes of the type [VO{Cl} 3-n {ON=C(CH 3 )(Ar)} n ] (where Ar = C 4 H 3 O-2, C 4 H 3 S-2, C 5 H 4 N-2 and n = 1 or 2) have been synthesized in excellent yields by the reaction of VOCl 3 with the sodium salts of corresponding internally functionallized oximes in refluxing anhydrous benzene. The complexes are characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, 1 H-, 1 3C{ 1 H}-and 51 V-NMR). FAB mass spectral analysis of one of the derivatives, [VOCl{ON=C(CH 3 )C 4 H 3 S} 2 ] indicates the monomeric nature of the complex. 51 V-NMR spectral studies of these complexes suggest tetra-coordination around the vanadium atom in solution. However, the single crystal X-ray diffraction study of a redistribution product [VOCl{ON=C(CH 3 )(C 4 H 3 S-2)} 2 ] AE CH 3 OH obtained on recrystallization of [VOCl 2 {ON=C(CH 3 )(C 4 H 3 S-2)}] from a methanol-hexane mixture shows the vanadium(V) atom is hepta-coordinated with distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. The oxo-atom occupies the axial position while the weakly coordinated CH 3 OH group is trans to the V=O atom. The two oximato ligands in the approximate pentagonal plane are bonded to the central vanadium atom in dihapto (g 2 -N, O) manner with the formation of three-membered rings. The V-Cl bond occupies the fifth position in the approximate plane.

The effectiveness of the ligand 4-hexadecyloxybenzyliminodiacetic acid (C 16 BIDA) for the selective removal of Cu 2+ from aqueous solutions using Ugand-modified micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (LM-MEUF) has been investigated. The cationic surfactant N-hexadecylpyridinium chloride (CPC) was used as the added colloid. Stirred cell ultrafiltration (UF) and semi-equilibrium dialysis (SED) methods were used to determine the effects of solution composition on the rejection of copper ions. The parameters studies include the concentrations of Cu 2+ , ligand, Ca 2+ , surfactant, and NaCl in the initial (feed) solution for UF and SED experiments and the applied pressure in the UF experiments. In solutions containing 100 mM CPC at pH 5.5, predominately 1:2 metal-ligand complexes are formed. Rejections of copper of up to 99.8% are observed, with almost no rejection of calcium, demonstrating the excellent selectivity and separation efficiency of C16BIDA in LM-MEUF. SED experiments showed that the ligand can be recovered for recycling by acid-stripping at pH 2.Surfactant-based separation processes are a class of chemical engineering separations that have great potential for removal and/or recovery of heavy metals and organic pollutants from water streams (7,2). Surfactant-based separation processes can require less energy, be less expensive, and have less environmental impact than traditional separation methods.Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is a surfactant-based separation technique that can be used to remove metal ions and/or dissolved organics from aqueous streams. In MEUF, the surfactant is present at a concentration well above its critical micelle concentration (CMC), so most of the surfactant is present as micelles. The micelles are roughly spherical aggregates containing about 50 to 150 surfactant molecules (3). The hydrocarbon chains of the surfactant fill the micelle interior making this core hydrophobic, and the hydrophilic portions of the surfactant are situated at the micelle surface. A variety of nitrones undergo deoxygenation when treated with an excess of lithium powder and a catalytic amount of 4,4'-di-tert-butylbiphenyl (DTBB) (10 mol%) in THF at room temperature to give the corresponding imines. The Li/DTBB system, when combined with nickel(II) chloride dihydrate allows the reduction of a series of nitrones to secondary amines. The use of the deuterium oxide-containing nickel(II) salt transforms the starting nitrones to deuterated secondary amines.
