“…Two further survivors were reported to have urinary outputs of 1,000 ml. or more per 24 hours by the 25th and 32nd days respectively (Boucot et al, 1957;Chervony et at., 1965). The surviving patients in this series were oliguric for 38, 46, and 120 days.…”

“…Calcification of the renal cortex as a consequence of acute bilateral cortical necrosis has been reported in 5 of the 14 survivors (Groen and Lindeboom, 1940;Gormsen et al, 1955;Boucot et al, 1957;Oram et al, 1963;Vernon-Parry and Williams, 1963). As both the presence and the absence of calcification have been noted in the survivors it appears to have diagnostic rather than prognostic value.…”

“…The most important indication for hremodialysis is acute renal failure due to a recoverable lesion, where death from biochemical abnormality would occur before the return of renal function. All forms of acute failure of previously normal kidneys must be regarded as potentially recoverable, since return of renal function has now been recorded even after bilateral cortical necrosis (Gormsen et al, 1955 ;Ober et al, 1956 ;Boucot et al, 1957 ;Bleumle et al, 1959). Since the pathology is often not known, acute renal failure is here classified atiologically, and our patients are reviewed under these headings :-1.…”

“…Only five survivors with proven renal cortical necrosis have been reported and all were adult females in whom the condition was precipitated by obstetrical complications (Crook, 1927;Gormsen, Iversen and Raaschou, 1955;Ober, Reid, Romney and Merrill, 1956;Boucot, Guild and Merrill, 1957;Lauler and Schreiner, 1958). However, renal cortical necrosis in dehydrated infants, diagnosed at autopsy, has been well documented (Campbell and Henderson, 1949), and was in fact regarded as the commonest cause of acute renal failure in infancy (Zuelzer, Charles, Kurnetz, Newton and Fallon, 1951).…”
