Bilabial Substitution Patterns during Consonant Production in a Case of Congenital Aglossia

Abstract: Purpose: Congenital aglossia is a rare syndrome in which an individual is born without a tongue. The present paper examines articulatory details of the production of multiple consonants by an aglossic speaker. Method:Real-time magnetic resonance imaging data of the upper airway were collected from the aglossic speaker. Air-tissue boundaries were determined from the video sequences using a segmentation algorithm, and dynamics of vocal-tract constrictions and cross-dimensions were calculated. Results:The aglossi… Show more

“…In another work, Toutios et al [4] propose a text-to-speech synthesis system using the estimated VT contours in rtMRI. Analyzing the time-varying dynamic changes of the vocal tract is crucial for several other applications such as identification and treatment of speech disorders [5], [6], speech production research [7], [8], [9] and articulatory synthesis [10].…”

“…In addition to its utility in characterizing typical speech articulation, rtMRI has been used to investigate speech produced by individuals with speech impairments secondary to a variety of conditions, including aglossia (McMicken et al, 2017;Toutios, Byrd, Goldstein, & Narayanan, 2017), oral cancer (Hagedorn et al, 2014;Hagedorn, Kim, et al, 2017;Lander-Portnoy, Goldstein, & Narayanan, 2017), and Figure 2. Snapshot from the web resource, illustrating the stimulus set.…”

“…The related terms, microglossia and hypoglossia, refer to an abnormally small tongue and an incompletely developed tongue, respectively (Salles et al, 2008). A review of the literature reveals reports of aglossia and hypoglossia associated with limb deformities (Alexander, Friedman, Eichen, & Buchbinder, 1992;Christian, Goldberg, Sturman, & Ingersoll, 1984;Coşkunfirat, Velidedeoğiu, Demir, & Kurtay, 1999;Grippaudo & Kennedy, 1998;Gupta, 2012;Hall, 1971;Howard & Hurt, have been conducted using electropalatography, videoflourography, and real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the person with CA (PwCA) in her 40s (McMicken, Von Berg, Wang, Kunihiro, Vento-Wilson, & Rogers, 2015;McMicken, Kunihiro, Wang, Von Berg, & Rogers, 2014;McMicken et al, 2017;. In addition, taste testing was conducted with the female as an adult (Mahood, Wang, McMicken, & Rock, 2017;McMicken, Wang, & Vento-Wilson, 2014).…”

“…Cineradiographic and audio-visual materials from the 16-year-old female cited in Allison et al (1987) have been studied extensively McMicken, Vento-Wilson, Von Berg, & Rogers, 2015;McMicken, Von Berg, & Iskarous, 2012). Additional studies have been conducted using electropalatography, videoflourography, and real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the person with CA (PwCA) in her 40s (McMicken, Von Berg, Wang, Kunihiro, Vento-Wilson, & Rogers, 2015;McMicken, Kunihiro, Wang, Von Berg, & Rogers, 2014;McMicken et al, 2017;.
