Bietti’s Crystalline Corneoretinal Dystrophy: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: The present study is the first to assess BCD prevalence in a population of retinitis pigmentosa patients, to describe clinically and angiographically its evolution from first symptom to legal blindness, and to localize the first fundus alterations not only at the posterior pole but also at the equator.

“…But VF defects beyond 30º may have been missed. However, Mataftsi and colleagues [10] observed in ICG angiography that atrophic changes of the choriocapillaris were not only in the posterior pole but also at the equator level, at the eccentricity of the vortex veins in the early stages of BCD. Our 85º VF results are exactly in agreement with their morphological evidence.…”

“…Three progressive stages of BCD, the early, intermediate, and advanced stages, have been described clinically [9,10]. Sporadic BCD case reports have described a variety of full-field electroretinography (fERG), visual field (VF), and multifocal ERG (mERG) abnormalities, even though the fundi appeared to be at a similar pathological/morphological stage [7,9,11,12].…”

“…The previous reports have shown similar results. 3,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] These results imply that the responses of ERG and EOG reflect the degree of retinal involvement.…”

“…Fluorescein angiographic changes occur early in the course of the disease, suggestive of the RPE as the primary site of the disease. 3,4,[9][10][11] The areas of RPE atrophy progressively enlarge as the disease progresses.…”

“…It can be asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed in an ordinary ocular examination. BCD is more common in East Asia especially in China and Japan, and it accounts for 3% of all nonsyndromic retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and 10% of all autosomal recessive RP patients [2,3].…”
