Biermannia longicheila (Orchidaceae, Aeridinae), a new species from southern Vietnam

Abstract: Biermannia King & Pantling (1898a: 591) comprises about ten species distributed from northeastern India and southern China through the Indochinese and Malay Peninsulas to Sumatra, Java and Borneo (Comber 1990, 2001, Seidenfaden & Wood 1992, Pearce & Cribb 2002, Chen & Wood 2009, Chase et al. 2015). “…Biermannia has 11 species distributed from Northeastern India to Java and Sumatra through Thailand, Indochina, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia (Seidenfaden, 1988, Seidenfaden, 1992, Seidenfaden and Wood, 1992, Rao, 2006). Two species have been described new to science from Vietnam recently (Averyanov et al., 2018a, Averyanov et al., 2018b). All species of this genus are miniature, canopy epiphytes with small, unattractive fugacious flowers, and so are easily overlooked in botanical surveys (Averyanov et al., 2018b).…”

“…Ten years after the publication of the genus, its second species, V. furcata Aver. & Nuraliev, was described (Averyanov et al, 2013; see also Averyanov, 2013;Nuraliev et al, 2019). After another ten years, the third species of the genus, V. proboscidea Aver., Vuong & V.C.Nguyen, was introduced, which is extremely close morphologically to V. furcata (Averyanov et al, 2023).…”
