“…An elegant alternative to FDEOFs is the complex EOFs in the time domain introduced into atmospheric science by Rasmusson et al (1981) using Hilbert singular decomposition. The method was refined later by Barnett (1983) and applied to the monsoon (Barnett, 1984a,b), atmospheric angular momentum (Anderson and Rosen, 1983), the QBO in northern hemispheric SLP (Trenberth and Shin, 1984), and coastal ocean currents (Merrifield and Winant, 1989).…”

“…FDEOFs generalise conventional EOFs in the sense that the covariance matrix used for EOFs is only related to the real part of the cross-spectrum matrix and hence does not use the whole information from the complex cross-spectrum matrix. The HEOF method (Rasmusson et al, 1981;Barnett, 1983;Horel, 1984;von Storch and Zwiers, 1999) is an alternative to FDEOFs and uses the Hilbert, or quadrature transform of the field. This transform allows HEOFs to deal with propagating structures/waves in the time domain using complexified fields.…”

“…Yasunail [ 1985,1989] debated whether the TBO should be considered part of the ENSO, demonstrating that it had its own unique character as well as different period scale and eastward phase speed. This view was shared by Trenberth [ 1980] but not by Rasmusson et al [1981]• who considered the TBO to be orle of the higherfrequency components of the ENSO. Indeed, Allan et al [1996] and Allan [2000] found the TBO and ENSO projecting similarly onto global standing modes of SST and SLP variability, Recently, however, subtle but significant differences have been observed in the Pacific standing modes of TBO and ENSO signals [Tourre et al, 2001], with SST anomalies of the TBO more confined to the equator than those of ENSO and displaced more to the east in the equatorial Pacific Ocean.…”

“…CEOF (e.g., Rasmusson et al 1981) Surv Geophys (2018) 39:435-465 439 variability due to the dominant influence of the ENSO. Therefore, through a careful synthetic study, we will justify the application of CICA for extracting ENSO and non-ENSO modes from GRACE TWS data similar to Eicker et al (2016).…”

“…As a result, the ordinary PCA approach has been modified to better deal with nonstationary information, which yielded methods such as the extended empirical orthogonal function (EEOF, Weare and Nasstrom 1982) and the complex empirical orthogonal function (CEOF, Rasmusson et al 1981). EEOF is also called multi-channel singular spectrum analysis (MSSA, Broomhead and King 1986a, b).…”
