“…This tendency towards more clinical or medical approaches and contents indicates the predominant role or lines of research that raise interest among Sports Science professionals in Spain as well as the research potential that health sciences have within our area of study. This predominance of health-related issues within our field of study was already confirmed by other authors (Blanca-Torres et al, 2019;Coronado et al, 2011;Pérez-Gutiérrez;Cobo-Corrales, 2020).…”

“…Sports Sciences in Spain have not been neglected by these bibliometric studies: studies have also been developed with the objective of measuring, in a more or less reliable way, the research activity of the area based on, for example, doctoral theses (Ortega et al, 2015;Olmedilla et al, 2017;Hernández-González et al, 2018, scientific journals (Villamón-Herrera et al, 2007;Devís-Devís et al, 2014;Reverter-Masia et al, 2014Hernández-González et al, 2016;Blanca-Torres et al, 2019) or studies on productions by researchers and institutions (Reverter-Masia et al, 2013;Hernández-González et al, 2016;Blanca-Torres et al, 2019). However, although knowledge is being generated, there are no longitudinal studies that analyse globally the scientific production in Sports Sciences associating it with financing aspects.…”

“…Since 1990 the number of publications has slowly increased, especially from until the present time. The same behavior was found in previous works on handball and other sports (CHIROSA RÍOS;MARTIN;OLMOS, 2013;PESET MANCEBO et al, 2013;PRIETO;GÓMEZ;SAMPAIO, 2015) and in the area of knowledge of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (BLANCA-TORRES et al, 2019).…”

“…Until very recently, the sports science field was not of much interest for researchers (TSIGILIS et al, 2010) and most of the contributions focused on medical aspects (i.e. injuries), as has been found in other studies in sport with respect to contributions from the field of medicine (BLANCA-TORRES et al, 2019;CHIROSA RÍOS;MARTIN;OLMOS, 2013;GONZÁLEZ et al, 2018;PRIETO;GÓMEZ;SAMPAIO, 2015). However, there has been a notable increase in the number of authors who wrote papers about handball in the last two decades, as has been pointed out by Prieto, Gómez and Sampaio (2015).…”

“…Scientific production in the field of badminton is scarce and diverse, focusing on the thematic areas of health and training [ 23 , 24 ] Although the number of publications has increased significantly since 2007, with Asian and European countries showing the highest rate of productivity [ 23 , 24 ], it is still low, particularly in terms of the benefits that this sport brings to the overall health of the athlete or player.…”
