Beyond work and family: A measure of work/nonwork interference and enhancement.

Abstract: Though early research on the work/nonwork interface was broader in scope, most recent research has focused on the interface between work and family. There is a need for an inclusive, validated measure of work/nonwork interference and enhancement that is appropriate for all workers regardless of their marital or family life status. The authors report here on 3 studies in which they develop a theoretically grounded and empirically validated multidimensional, bidirectional measure of work/nonwork interference and… Show more

“…Here again, results confirm the primal role of corporeality (Cromby, 2007;Santiago-Delefosse, 2014) across women's accounts, since it enables them to let go through relaxation, physical exercise, breathing sensations, etc. This finding has been previously discussed in the literature, where authors have claimed the positive impact of physical activities to release job stress (Bryce & Haworth, 2002;Fisher et al, 2009;Hecht & Boies, 2009).

“…Others produced evidence to the effect non-financial job characteristics contribute to life satisfaction to a greater extent than do financial characteristics (Helliwell & Huang, 2010). The rationale for these findings receives some support from role theory, when beneficial resources derived from work accrue to satisfaction with life (Fisher, Bulger & Smith, 2009).…”
