Beyond photoaging: additional factors involved in the process of skin aging

Abstract: Studies assessing the impact of extrinsic factors on skin aging have increased during the last with the increase in life expectancy. Although most of the studies are about the sun radiation impact, many factors should be considered in elderly people, beyond environmental conditions. Lifestyle factors, like diet, sleeping, smoking, should be analyzed carefully, as common age-related conditions (menopause, diabetes, pulmonary diseases, etc.). All these factors could accelerate the natural decline of skin structu… Show more

“…The clinical signs of photoaging are fine and coarse wrinkles, actinic keratoses, solar elastosis, yellowing, pigmentation disorders and premalignant lesions, skin atrophy, senile purpura, freckles, solar comedones, telangiectasia, laxity, roughness, and extreme dryness [8]. UV damage can also cause significant changes in some of the mechanical properties of the stratum corneum, reducing its cell cohesion and mechanical integrity; the UV radiation also affects the molecular structure of cell proteins and lipids [4]. According to Leccia et.al, 2019, at the cellular level DNA damage is the main event following UV exposure.…”

“…Our skin acts as the first barrier of defence against various infections, trauma and environmental factors. Risk factors like ultraviolet (UV) radiation, environmental pollutants, xenobiotics, ageing, wounds, chronic inflammation and inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, are major impediments against the proper maintenance of the skin barrier (1)(2)(3)(4). Oxidative stress, which compromises proper skin integrity, is one of the most common features among these various risk factors (5)(6)(7).…”

“…Multiple studies assess the impact of lifestyle like diet, sleeping, smoking, on facial aging [14], [15]. Further studies emphasize the importance of promoting psychosocial resources and mental health for the deceleration of facial aging as well as maintenance of good health [16].…”
