“…Friedrich Zahn, head of the statistical office since 1907, reintroduced the debate around the German Lebensraum into the management of population data by reasserting the importance that each kinship group should have its sovereign territory. Zahn was central in propagating the Lebensraum philosophy of the NSDAP, and devised an extensive program to "nurture the health of the German race" (Gutberger 2007), which grounded itself in intricate assessments of populations and divergence. Zahn attests to the closeness of statistics with the National Socialist modulating relations for germany movement, where individuality and subjective contradictions were treated as flies in the ointment of an increasingly centralized regime.…”

As Tönnies and Heberle were being pushed out of Kiel, Mackenroth became professor of theoretical national economy, economic politics, and statistics there (Gutberger 2006). Gunther Ipsen (1899–1984), an outspoken defender of the German peasantry, published Blut und Boden ( Blood and Soil ) just in time for the 1933 seizure of power.…”

“…But the ideological migration system, which became ruling orthodoxy under the Nazis, not only did not die, it and its propagators managed to remain in control of German research for another 30 years. The postwar development of German historical demography, as in other intellectual fields, shows considerable continuities of ideas and personnel (Gutberger 2006: 12).…”
