Beta-Thromboglobulin and Platelet Factor 4 Levels in Pregnancy and Preeclampsia

Abstract: The plasma levels of beta-thromboglobulin (BTG) and platelet factor 4 (PF-4) were measured in patients during the normal obstetric period and in preeclampsia. A significant increase was observed in the two proteins with respect to the nonpregnant control group. Both proteins increased significantly with preeclampsia and a further increment was observed with the severity of preeclampsia though no significant difference in PF-4 levels was encountered between pregnant and mildly preeclamptic women. There was no c… Show more

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that both β‐TG and PF‐4 concentrations increased significantly in pre‐eclampsia compared to normotensive pregnancy, and a further increment was observed with the severity of pre‐eclampsia (26, 27). In normotensive pregnancy in the present study, the β‐TG concentration showed a significant increase, whereas PF‐4 concentration did not differ.…”

“…A potential explanation for the latter is physiological activation (with associated partial release of granule contents) of platelets during pregnancy . In keeping with this, plasma PF4 levels are increased in pregnancy . Interestingly, while albumin levels were reduced in the PR, fibrinogen (FG) levels were increased.…”

“…-thromboglobulin (BTG) is an index of invivo platelet activation. There is controversy regarding BTG where both increased [29] and normal [30,31] levels were reported. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is the enzyme that breaks down adenosine -an inhibitor of platelet aggregation.…”
