This article discusses what it means to be a “model minority” linguistically by examining how language ideologies, class, and gender shape language use for Desi (South Asian American) teenagers in a Silicon Valley high school. Upper middle‐class Desi teens follow monolingual norms while middle‐class Desi teens construct heteroglossic “FOB styles” that incorporate Punjabi, Desi Accented English, California slang, and hip‐hop lexicon. Style construction is influenced by gendered community norms that also prevail at school, and boys and girls variably regard school spaces as public or private. Nonnormative, gendered ways of speaking are contrasted to “model” ones and analyzed for their racializing consequences. [race, gender, youth, style, South Asian American]

The maintenance of community languages has always been a challenging field for investigation. Most of these languages live under the cultural power of the host country language. Therefore, it has never been an easy task for immigrants and their children to maintain their community languages, especially under the linguistic and cultural pressures of the English language. The majority of community languages lose ground to English and adopt it in several domains in everyday life and this is a sign of language shift. This latter is most likely predictable in Englishspeaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand, England and the USA, where English is a dominant and the more prestigious language. In Australia, statistics from a 2016 census demonstrate that only a few languages have withstood the cultural strength and high status of English language (ABS, 2016). As a result of that, the maintenance of community languages remains a major concern for linguists, educators, language activists and for immigrant families, who need to support and maintain these languages for the next generation.

Cet article vise à évaluer la contribution matérielle et immatérielle des femmes rurales dans le cadre de la petite agriculture des arrière-pays du Maroc et notamment les contraintes qu’elles rencontrent pour dépasser les difficultés d’accès aux principaux facteurs de production dont le foncier, l’eau, le crédit et le conseil technique. L’activité des femmes rurales est généralement invisible, c’est-à-dire peu reconnue ou valorisée au sein de la société, ce qui conduit à une sous-estimation de leurs contributions à l’économie et à la société. Cela tient en grande partie à leur relative exclusion de la sphère monétaire et marchande.
