“…radiation of 296.7 nm (Giese, Christensen & Jeppson, 1950;Knox, Guin & Cockerell, 1957). If this wavelength is as damaging to guinea-pigs as it is to man, the apparent anti-inflammatory activity of Uval, BHA, NDGA and PABA may be due only to absorption of u.v.…”

“…The benzophenones also are excellent sunscreens, equal or superior to other sunscreening agents. 22 Commercially available sunscreens increase the minimal erythema threshold only four to eight times, whereas 10 per cent concentrations of 3-benzoyl-4-hydroxy-6-methoxy-benzenesulfonic acid and para-aminobenzoic acid in vanishing cream increase the minimal erythema threshold approximately 100 times. An exceptionally wide absorption spectrum characterizes the benzophenones, extending from very short wavelengths almost to visible light; therefore, they absorb wavelengths that produce erythema, pigmentation and many photosensitivity reactions.…”

“…Since it has been established that the erythemogenic portion of the solar spectrum fall between 2,900 and 3,130 A [21], it is of significance that use of the benzophenones, which have a wide UV absorption spectra, have been shown to provide excellent protection from these erythema-producing UV wavelengths [22,23]. The benzophenones have also been reported to screen those wavelengths which cause pigmentation and photosensitivity phenom ena [22], A representative substituted benzophenone, 3-benzoyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyoxy-benzensulphonic acid, was described by K nox el al.…”
