Bent Anthracene Dimers as Versatile Building Blocks for Supramolecular Capsules

Abstract: long investigations into bent anthracene dimers as versatile building blocks for supramolecular capsules. The investigations initiated in 2008 with the design of an anthracene dimer with a meta-phenylene spacer bearing two substituents on the convex side. Using the bent polyaromatic building block, we began to develop novel supramolecular capsules from two different synthetic approaches. One is a coordination approach, which was pursued by converting the building block into a bent ligand with two pyridine unit… Show more

“…Over the last decade, the group of Prof. Yoshizawa developed a number of aromatic capsules featuring a bent anthracene dimer as the common structural motif. [62,63] As it is shown in Figure 4, the Group developed a wide variety of structures, all of them characterized by the presence of a well-defined aromatic cavity surrounded by either glycolic chains or charged species. By combination of self-assembly in water solution and clever designing of coordinative bonding around palladium atoms, the group developed association colloids featuring remarkable applications in host guest chemistry, selective recognition, modulation of guest reactivity, water solubilization of organic dyes and nanocarbons.…”

“…Reprinted with permission from ref. [63] The most attractive feature of all such structures is the welldefined nature of the aromatic cavity. [72] Indeed, where standard and designer surfactant self-assemble into dynamic structures that are continually evolving in the reaction mixture, anthracene based nanocapsules already demonstrated a remarkable selectivity due to the robustness of the aromatic cavity they form.…”

“…Notably, the host capability of (AA) n toward hydrophobic aromatic guests are superior to that of common micelles, for example, sodium dodecyl sulfate-based micelle (SDS) n (Fig. 1d) [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] . We thus employed the bent structure and replaced its polyaromatic panels by cycloalkyl groups to make new amphiphile CHA (Fig.…”
