Benign Breast Lesions: Minimally Invasive Vacuum-assisted Biopsy with 11-Gauge Needles—Patient Acceptance and Effect on Follow-up Imaging Findings

Abstract: Directional vacuum-assisted 11-gauge needle biopsy of the breast is well accepted by patients and rarely produces changes that may alter the mammographic or sonographic appearance of the breast at 6-month follow-up.

“…Complications of this type have been reported, especially after stereotaxic VABB [25]. In contrast to the reports of other authors [26], we did not find that VABB interferes with subsequent mammographic or sonographic assessments of the breast. This represents an additional advantage of VABB over excisional biopsy, which can leave scars that are difficult to interpret during subsequent studies.…”

“…The use of the stereotactic VABB technique has increased because it provides a minimally invasive, faster and less expensive method of sampling non-palpable abnormalities that are visible in mammograms [14,15]. What distinguishes the VABB technique from that of the core biopsy is its high sensitivity and specificity, as well as its ability to retrieve microcalcifications [16,17]. However, even though the use of VABB is very appealing, its underestimation rate appears to be its weak point.…”

“…The device can be used by anyone who has been appropriately trained, 14 and this biopsy technique has high patient acceptance. 15 VAE of benign lesions has been approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. 16 At present, there is a pragmatic approach to the volume of the tissue to be excised.…”
