Ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy: Use at the European Institute of Oncology in 2010

Abstract: KEYWORDSBreast; Histology biopsy; Ultrasonography; Mammotome; Surgical biopsy.Abstract Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB), which plays a fundamental role in the preoperative assessment of microcalcifications, can also be used (with ultrasound guidance) to obtain histology samples of breast lesions that are visible on ultrasonography. It is particularly useful when the lesion diameter is less than 1 cm. This technique has been used in our institute since 1998, and in this report we analyze our experience with… Show more

“…Table shows the characteristics of all included studies. Among the final 36 eligible studies, 31 were cohort studies (20 142 cases), 1 was randomised controlled trial (RCT) (74 cases), and 4 non‐randomised controlled trials (NRCTs) (574 cases), describing a total of 20 868 patients (mean age, 36–56 years), derived from China (7), United States (6), Italy (5), Germany (5), Korea (2), Japan (2), Spain (1), Poland (1), France (1), United Arab Emirates (1), Britain (1), Switzerland (1), Israel (1), New Zealand (1), and Canada (1). VABB was performed using US (24) and mammography (12) location modes.…”

“…In our patients, a sufficient number of samples for histopathological examination were obtained in the first biopsy from 647 patients (99.2%) [16]. VACB can have therapeutic value, while being well tolerated and associated with low complication rates compared to surgery [17]. In our study, we entirely removed lesions with a low-risk of malignancy using VACB in imaging examinations with an incision diame-ter up to 15 mm in 94.5% of women.…”

“…Minimally invasive biopsy tests have been widely used in the early diagnosis of breast lesions in recent years, including needle-biopsies and image (ultrasound/mammography/ magnetic resonance imaging)-guided vacuum-assisted systems (1,2). Ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted (US-VA) system is the most common used method clinically.…”
