Beneficial effects of serial contractions on muscle performance after a brief period of rest

Abstract: The return of force to initial values, rather than a persistent decrement was a result of several mechanisms operating simultaneously. The sEMG data indicate an increase in conduction velocity, while an increase in peak RFD suggests contraction-induced facilitation of ATPase pump activity. However, alterations in muscle coordination were observed as a reduction in antagonist co-activity.

“…The higher MPF we observed was most likely due to muscle fiber conduction velocity changes between 50% and 100% MVC . Accordingly, a nearly identical MPF of 123 ± 27 H z was reported for the tibialis anterior at 100% MVC using bipolar electrodes placed away from the motor point …”

“…37,38 Accordingly, a nearly identical MPF of 123 6 27 HZ was reported for the tibialis anterior at 100% MVC using bipolar electrodes placed away from the motor point. 39 With this electrode placement, G2 may still be within the innervation zone. 4 Therefore, it is reasonable to question the variability of amplitude and spectral estimates we obtained.…”

“…A load cell (JR3, Woodland, CA, USA) was secured under the foot plate of which the foot was restrained by a minimally padded steel bar located proximal to the metatarsals for all torque recordings (Christie et al 2009). There were 3 days of testing to assess the reliability of the measures as participants can exhibit a learning effect during maximal strength assessment (Green et al 2014). On each day, participants were asked to perform the same tasks.…”
