PurposeThe purpose of this study is to identify the characterizations of business process management (BPM) methodology in hotel industry through an aggregate processing of the core cyclesteps (CCCs) of the highly-cited BPM life-cycle models in the literature aiming to highlight the major issues of the current methodological approach of BPM in hotels when to put the notion of service process into practice.Design/methodology/approachThe paper identifies and examines the most popular BPM life-cycles models in the literature and locates 15 life-cycles that are highly cited. The paper then focuses on applying the theory on nine listed hotel companies in Egypt using a questionnaire in the form of a semi-structured interview technique.FindingsThe CCSs of BPM life-cycle model applied in hotels revealed a gap between BPM theory and practice in this sector. Utilizing this model of BPM life-cycle, the paper focuses on describing several of the main problems or pitfalls found in the methodological approach of BPM in hotels, which brings the essence of the whole operation management problems.Practical implicationsIn light of these findings, the paper discusses the practical implications and focuses on recommendations on how to properly improve the methodological approach of BPM in hotels in order to get better business results.Originality/valueThe paper bridges the gap between BPM theory and practice and suggests recommendations that will assist hotel companies to eliminate the problems of poor process management (PM). There are also future research recommendations to enhance the knowledge of BPM theory in the service sector.

PurposeThe globalisation of supply chains has contributed to modern slavery by degrading labour standards and work practices. The inherent difficulties involved in monitoring extremely fragmented production processes also render workers in and from developing countries vulnerable to labour exploitation. This research adopts a benchmark methodology that will help examine the inherent modern slavery challenges.Design/methodology/approachThis study examines how the benchmark model, including governance, risk assessment, purchasing practice, recruitment and remedy of victims, addresses supply chain modern slavery challenges. The proposed hypotheses are tested based on the reoccurring issues of modern slavery in global supply chains.FindingsEstimations suggest that modern slavery is a growing and increasingly prominent international problem, indicating that it is the second largest and fastest growing criminal enterprise worldwide except for narcotics trafficking. These social issues in global supply chains have drawn attention to the importance of verifying, monitoring and mapping supply chains, especially in lengthy and complex supply chains. However, the advent of digital technologies and benchmarking methodologies has become one of the existing key performance indicators (KPIs) for measuring the effectiveness of modern slavery initiatives in supply chains.Originality/valueThis review provides an understanding of the current situation of global supply chains concerning the growing social issue of modern slavery. However, this includes various individual specialities relating to global supply chains, modern slavery, socially sustainable supply chain management (SCM), logistic social responsibility, corporate social responsibility and digitalisation. Furthermore, the review provided important implications for researchers examining the activities on benchmarking the effectiveness of the existing initiatives to prevent modern slavery in the supply chains.

Benchmarking Criteria and Adoption in Designing Business School’s Performance Management System

This paper aims to present a principle to the business school institution that have slight familiarity in espousing benchmarking toward better performance. This is done since designing performance management system, espescially in defining key indicators is essential in achieving improvement process and better service. One approach to assist institution -notwithstanding with some pitfalls in it- is benchmarking. Moreover given the fact that industry best practice may never be found as it also relate with organizational culture, the criteria to adopt benchmarking strategy become crucial. The study conducts through a series of descriptive study to top nine Indonesia’s business schools. The research stages start with literature surveys of several published article in international journal related with benchmarking criteria and adoption that have been done by previous researchers. Followed by descriptive study through observation, interviews, document reviews, and filling out the questionnaire by the dean or vice dean of academic as well as the quality assurance administrator. By accomplishing analysis, it revealed four factors with internal factors as the most influential factors on benchmarking criteria and adoption, followed by functional; competitive factors; and the last is process, and along with factor analysis came up ten criteria for benchmark strategy implementation. By carrying out such research finding, it will be useful as a basis for decision maker in formulating the business school’s strategy for enhancing the global competitiveness for the foreseeable future.
