Beliefs about insulin as a predictor of fear of hypoglycaemia

Abstract: The present study extends previous research by exploring the predictive value of beliefs about insulin therapy in fear of hypoglycaemia (FoH). Data were collected on 81 Spanish adults (aged 18-58 years) with type 1 diabetes. Participants completed a survey questionnaire containing the following measures: state-trait anxiety inventory, beliefs about medicines questionnaire (specific scale), a modified version of the FoH Survey (worry scale) and different questions about demographic and clinical information (dur… Show more

“…No gender differences were found on the beliefs of insulin necessity. A previous study which investigated the BMQ in adults with T1D (aged 18–58 years, mean age 30 years)40 found much lower scores than our study. Specifically, they reported mean scores of 2.5 (SD 0.8) for insulin concerns and 4.3 (SD 0.6) for insulin necessity.…”

“…The repercussions of FH on both the evolution of the disease and the psychosocial status of DM I patients have been clearly shown in previous works. However, the risk factors for suffering such fear remain unclear (Andebro, Amsberg, Adamson et al ., ; Beléndez & Hernández‐Mijares, ). This study considered two main objectives with the aim of following up on those works: to find empirical evidence of the association between FH and some sociodemographic and clinical variables, and to identify the risk factors for FH in DM I patients.…”

“…The collected data were analyzed in SPSS V. 24. The independent t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to study hypoglycemia fear based on demographic factors, and multiple linear regression for examining the effect of other factors.…”
