Belief when evidence does not support theory

Abstract: Marketing has looked to other scientific disciplines to supplement its understanding of motivation. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory is frequently uncritically cited in texts, even though most evidence has failed to support its validity. Science requires that theory be supported by empirical facts. Maslow's theory is briefly summarized, along with a review of the related literature. Reasons are given and empirically supported for the continued popularity of Maslow's theory in marketing despite lack of scient… Show more

“…King and Bruner (2000) argue that validity testing must take into consideration social desirability effects, while Fisher and Katz (2000) go further and argue that associations between measures of social desirability and self-reports can be used to correlate measurement validity. Furthermore, Soper, Milford, and Rosenthal (1995) provide a critique of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, using validity and reliability as a basis for proposing a cautionary note on accepting theory without evidence. The theory classifies all human endeavours as an attempt to fulfill one of five needs (see Figure 1): physiological, safety, belongingness and love, esteem, and self-actualization.…”
