“…Strong mixing causing increased resuspension has a limiting effect on filtration (ALDRIDGE et al 1987, WIOENIEWSKI 1990, MADON et al 1998). SCHAFER's (1953) studies indicate that the prosobranch V. viviparus filters at a flow speed of 3 m s -1 . The favourable effect of slight water flow consists in mixing, due to which food resources are replenished in the thin layer of water (a few cm) above the bottom which is available to bivalves and filtrationist snails.…”
