Behavioural responses of young anaemic Indian Children to iron-folic acid supplements

Abstract: 1. Behavioural responses of young anaemic Indian children to iron-folic acid supplements were assessed in two separate studies using the Indian adaptation of Wechsler's (1967) intelligence scale for children (WISC).2. The first study was an exploratory study in which the cognitive behaviour of 5-8-year-old children of both sexes was assessed before and after supplementation with 20 mg elemental Fe and 0.1 mg folic acid given daily for a period of 60 d.3. “…Previous research has shown the detrimental effect of iron deficiency on adult labor force productivity [Thomas et al, 2006] 6 , but to date there is no rigorous evidence that IDA is an important contributing factor 4 See, for instance: Seshadri et al [1982]; ; ; Groner et al [1986]; Kashyap and Gopaldas [1987]; Seshadri and Gopaldas [1989]; Soemantri [1989]; Bruner et al [1996]. One large study in Thailand could not replicate the beneficial effects of iron supplementation found in other settings (Pollitt et al, 1989;Sungthong et al, 2004).…”

“…Experimental and observational studies have linked iron deficiency to adverse effects on child development, including impairments of cognitive, emotional, and motor development (Pollitt 1993; Grantham-McGregor 2001; Gewa 2009), growth (Lawless 1994), immune function, and increased risk of infection (Berger 2000; Beard 2001). The relative risk for mental retardation associated with a 1 g/dL increase in population mean haemoglobin level has been estimated at 0.78 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.70 to 0.86) (WHO 2004).…”
