Behaviour prediction of closed-loop HTS coils in non-uniform AC fields

Abstract: Field decay rate is the key characteristic of superconducting magnets based on closed-loop coils. However, in Maglev trains or rotating machines, closed-loop magnets work in external AC fields and will exhibit an evidently accelerated field decay resulting from dynamic resistances, which are usually much larger than joint resistance. Nevertheless, there has not been a numerical model capable of systematically studying this behaviour, which is the main topic of this work. The field decay curves of a closed-loop… Show more

“…Firstly, the direct current in the closed-loop coil is injected by using the field-cooling method [26] and is ramped to 81 A in 0.1 s. The persistent current in the coil is freely relaxed to 80.5 A by the index loss, and then a transverse field, B x , with 50 Hz sine waveform is applied.…”

“…Each H model is built on a 2D axisymmetric geometry. The azimuthal current distribution from the ECG model is input into these H models to calculate the dynamic resistance distribution, because the dynamic resistance is dependent on the transport current of HTS tapes [17,43]. Meanwhile, the dynamic resistance distribution is fed back from the H model to the ECG model to update the I ϕ and I r distributions.…”

“…One of the application scenarios of the flux pump is to use the device to compensate for the magnetic field decay. Such applications include HTS magnets for magnetic levitation which suffers from the field decay due to the harmonics of ground windings [42], and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnets where 0.1 ppm h −1 level of field stability is required [43] and no HTS joint is good enough. In such applications, to run the magnet under driven mode will introduce huge heat load due to heat conduction along the current leads.…”
