Strain KIT, isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), has the capacity to inhibit the growth of the fish pathogens Vibrio anguillarum and Aeromonas salmonicida. Strain K I T is a motile Gram-positive psychrophilic rod that lacks both catalase and oxidase, which does not grow on acetate containing media, but grows at pH 9 and in TSB with up to 6 O/ O sodium chloride content. Strain K I T is facultatively anaerobic and tryptone as a sole source of nutrient promotes growth. The most abundant cellular fatty acid of strain K I T is oleic acid (18: 1cis9). Based on 165 rDNA sequence comparisons, it is suggested that strain K I T is phylogenetically closely related to C. altenfunditum. However, the unique phenotypic attributes of strain K I T suggest that it represents a new species. The name Carnobacterium inhibens is proposed, for which the type strain is K I T (= CCUG 317283.

In order to evaluate the role of the stringent response in starvation adaptations of the marine Vtbrio sp. strain S14, we have cloned the relA gene and generated relaxed mutants of this organism. The concentrations of biologically available nutrients are generally low in natural bacterial habitats (34, 35), and adaptations to restrictions in nutrient and energy availability may contribute significantly to the fitness of bacteria in such environments. Marine vibrios are adequate models for studies of starvation responses, and their adaptations include the development of general stress resistance and the ability to survive extended periods of complete carbon and energy starvation. Alterations in cell surface components, adhesive properties, nutrient scavenging, and uptake systems are commonly observed (reviewed in references 21, 22, and 33). The marine isolate Vibrio sp. strain S14 has served as a model organism in many of these studies (38). It responds to multiplenutrient starvation by a developmental process comprising the temporally ordered induction of more than 66 starvationinduced (Sti) proteins (39). The identities of the Sti proteins are, with some exceptions (17), unknown, but it is assumed that phenotypic adaptations during the starvation response can be ascribed to the induction of specific Sti proteins. That is the case with Escherichia coli, in which several of the phenotypes that are expressed during stationary phase are dependent on specific members of the as or RpoS regulon (14).The transition of growing Vbrio sp. strain S14 cells to multiple-nutrient starvation includes the induction of the stringent response (39), a regulatory network with pleiotropic effects on cellular physiology, primarily studied as it occurs in E. coli (3). RATIONALECompound specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of nitrogen in amino acids has proven a valuable tool in many fields (e.g. ecology). Several intact polar lipids (IPLs) also contain nitrogen, and their nitrogen isotopes have the potential to elucidate food-web interactions or metabolic pathways. Here we have developed novel methodology for the determination of δ 15 N values of nitrogen-containing headgroups of IPLs using gas chromatography coupled with isotope ratio mass spectrometry. METHODSIntact polar lipids with nitrogen-containing headgroups were hydrolyzed and the resulting compounds were derivatized by 1) acetylation with pivaloyl chloride for compounds with amine and hydroxyl groups or 2) esterification using acidified 2-propanol followed by acetylation with pivaloyl chloride for compounds with both carboxyl and amine groups. The δ 15 N values of derivatives were subsequently determined using gas chromatography/combustion/isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. RESULTSIntact polar lipids with ethanolamine and amino acid headgroups, such as phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine, were successfully released from the IPLs
