Experimental studies were conducted on 36 grouted splices to investigate their mechanical performance under four loading schemes: (1) incremental tensile loading, (2) repeated tensile loading, (3) cyclic loading at high stress, and (4) cyclic loading at large strain. Load-deformation responses of the grouted splices under cyclic loadings were featured with pinching effect and stiffness degradation compared to those responses under tensile loadings. The shape of the hysteresis loops of load-deformation curves was similar to that under incremental tensile loading. For the purpose of structural analysis, stress-strain relationships were presented for grouted splices under various loadings.Keywords: sleeve connector, grouted splice, cyclic loading, stress-strain relationship. An experimental program concerning 48 specimens of grouted sleeve splices, first heated up to 600°C and then subjected to cyclic loading was presented and discussed in this study. Similar rebar splices were often used in the precast concrete structures designed for seismic regions. The temperature of the splice and the compressive strength of the grout were the main variables considered in this study. It is found that the temperature mainly affected the peak bearing capacity of the grout and the failure pattern of the connection. In fact, the typical failure pattern at room temperature (rebar fracture outside the sleeve) turned to rebar pullout of the sleeve above 400°C, which indicated that below this temperature grout‐to‐rebar bond kept most of its original efficacy. On the contrary, bond failure occurred for all specimens at 600°C because of rebar slip. A calculation method was proposed as well to evaluate the peak bearing capacity of grouted sleeve splice, based on the load transferring mechanisms of the bond between grout‐to‐rebar and sleeve‐to‐grout. The conducted experimental study and analysis provide a better understanding on the bond mechanism of thermally damaged grouted sleeve splices subjected to cyclic loading.

Quasi‐static test and strut‐and‐tie modeling of precast concrete shear walls with unconnected vertically distributed reinforcements

To solve the fabrication problems of traditional precast shear walls caused by too many connections joints, a new type of precast shear wall with unconnected vertically distributed reinforcements and concealed bracings is developed in this paper. Four full-scale shear walls, including one cast-in-place specimen and three precast specimens, were tested under low-cycle lateral loading conditions to evaluate the seismic performance of the new type of precast shear wall. The test results showed that the loading capacity and energy dissipation of the new type of precast shear wall were comparable to those of the cast-in-place specimen; however, the failure mode was similar to the damage mechanism of an infilled wall frame, not the traditional bending-shear mode of shear walls. Then, a new strut-and-tie model considering dowel action was proposed for this new type of precast shear wall. Finally, a parametric study was conducted by finite element analysis to determine a reasonable value of the effective strength coefficient for the strut-and-tie model. Good agreement was achieved between the test and model results.
