Behaviour of Earth Dam under Seismic Load Considering Nonlinearity of the Soil

Abstract: The stability and safety are very important issues for the dam structure which are built in seismic regions. The dam body consists of soil materials that behave nonlinearly modelled with finite elements. The numerical investigation employs a fully nonlinear finite element analysis considering linear and elastic-plastic constitutive model to describe the material properties of the soil. In this paper, seismic analysis of an earthen dam is carried out using Geo-Studio software based on finite element method. Ini… Show more

“…The comparison between the response of the elastic and elastoplastic analysis shows that the presence of plastic deformations leads to the attenuation of accelerations in the dam, particularly at the dam crest; this result is attributed to the dissipation of energy by plastic deformation. The results obtained are conclusive in more than one way, compared to the work carried out in the same context [12,13,14,15] and can be used preferentially as a database for subsequent investigation work in the field of modelling the dynamic behaviour of earthen dams.…”

“…It is used to evaluate safety factors with shear strength reduction'' SSR or ''phi-c reduction'' techniques (Maosong and Cang-Qin 2009;Baker 2006). Some combined methods based on probabilistic approaches of slope analysis and design with an aid of LEM, and FEM were investigated (El-Ramly et al 2002;Li and Lumb 1987;Griffiths and Fenton 2004;Raja and Maheshwari 2014;Raja and Maheshwari 2016). Recently, an artificial neural network with built-in optimization techniques based on the self-optimizing genetic algorithms (GA) was considered (Sung Eun Cho 2009).…”

“…x the nonlinear seismic behavior of earth dams was considered in [15], using the finite element method and Geo-Studio software. In the numerical study, a nonlinear finite element analysis was used, taking into account the linear and elastic-plastic components of the model to describe the soil properties;…”
