Behavioral economics in information systems research: Critical analysis and research strategies

Abstract: Theories of decision-making have long been important foundations for information systems (IS) research and much of IS is concerned with information processing for decision making. The discipline of behavioral economics (BE) provides the dominant contemporary approach for understanding human decision-making. Therefore, it is logical that IS research that involves decision making should consider BE as foundation or reference theory. Surprisingly, and despite calls for greater use of BE in IS research, it seems t… Show more

“…Since its inception, the study of information systems has relied heavily on theories of decision-making, as much of the field deals with data analysis and processing for the JICES 21,3 purpose of making better choices (Arnott and Gao, 2022). The dual-process theory of decision cognition considers the BE perspective present in the privacy calculus and can explain why people make decisions in a certain way (Kehr et al, 2015).…”

“…The dual-process theory of decision cognition considers the BE perspective present in the privacy calculus and can explain why people make decisions in a certain way (Kehr et al , 2015). In their review article, Arnott and Gao (2022) find that despite requests for further use of BE in information management research, it appears that scholars have been sluggish to embrace the field’s most prominent theory of decision-making, the dual-process theory as a point of reference. Dual-process theory (Epstein, 1994; Sloman, 1996; Stanovic and West, 2000; Kahneman, 2011) holds that there are two types of cognitive processes underlying our judgments, decisions and problem solving.…”
