Behavioral and Autonomic Effects of Caffeine in Normal Boys

Abstract: Following a 1-week baseline, 19 normal boys (mean age 9.8 ±1.8 years) ingested either caffeine (5 mg/kg) or placebo twice a day for a 2-week period per condition in a double-blind crossover study (total study duration of 5 weeks) to study the behavioral, autonomic and side effects of caffeine. Mothers of the whole sample and children who were low caffeine users could distinguish between drug conditions by side effects. Caffeine increased autonomic reactivity of low users only. Behavioral and autonomic results … Show more

“…Other effects in these studies included nervousness, fidgeting, jitteriness, restlessness, hyperactivity, and sleeplessness (123, 187, 188). When children were stratified by prestudy caffeine intake, emotions and behaviors differed between low- and high-dose consumers (187, 188). Children consuming high doses were more easily frustrated and were more nervous during baseline tests than were the children consuming lower doses.…”

“…One study, in which researchers assessed caffeine consumption and features of caffeine dependence in teenagers using a phone screen, showed that 41.7% reported symptoms of tolerance and 77.8% reported symptoms of withdrawal (Bernstein et al, 1994). In addition, adolescents who do not regularly consume caffeine tend to report more negative symptoms when given caffeine than those youth who are habitual consumers (Rapoport et al, 1981a). For example, a study in which adolescents who typically consumed either low or high levels (> 500 mg/day) of caffeine were given caffeine (10 mg/kg/day) or placebo for two weeks, found that parents of low consumers rated them as more restless, fidgety, and having difficulty sleeping when they were given caffeine.…”

“…The low caffeine consumers did not show an increase in motor activity when given caffeine. The high caffeine consumers had a trend for more speech dysfluencies on placebo (p < 0.1), while low caffeine consumers did not (Rapoport et al 1981a). The high caffeine consumers experienced withdrawal symptoms when given placebo.…”

“…In a third publication from 1981 (Rapoport et al 1981a), the investigators used two different age group; nineteen pre-pubertal boys aged 10.6 years (± 2.5 years) and 20 boys in the late adolescents / young adult men aged 21.7 years (± 3.4 years). They were given a single dose of caffeine 3 mg/kg bw, 10 mg/kg bw or placebo in a double-blind cross-over design, with 48 hours between each treatment period.…”
