Begomovirus research in India: A critical appraisal and the way ahead

Abstract: Begomoviruses are a large group of whitefly-transmitted plant viruses containing single-stranded circular DNA encapsidated in geminate particles. They are responsible for significant yield losses in a wide variety of crops in India. Research on begomoviruses has focussed on the molecular characterization of the viruses, their phylogenetic analyses, infectivities on host plants, DNA replication, transgenic resistance, promoter analysis and development of virus-based gene silencing vectors. There have been a num… Show more

“…In horticultural crops, enormous losses caused by this biotic constraint have been widely recognized (Berlinger, 1986;Lapidot and Friedmann, 2002;Morales, 2011;Borah and Dasgupta, 2012). Literature available have documented that in pepper, host resistance to B. tabaci is mainly mediated by morphological traits of plants, such as leaf trichomes and leaf thickness (Firdaus et al, 2011).…”

“…Studies on host plant resistance to Begomovirus have been carried out in various crops, such as tomato, bean, and cassava. The outcomes of such studies have been difficult to widely adopt due to the variation in occurrence of virus strains in certain geographic areas (Borah and Dasgupta, 2012).…”

“…They are branded as monopartite (a single DNA) or a bipartite (with two DNA components: DNA-A and DNA-B) (Figure 2), based on their genome organization (Mansoor et al 2003;Jeske 2009), infecting mostly dicotyledonous plants like mungbean, urdbean and soybean (Haq et al 2011a). The two DNA components namely, DNA-A and DNA-B, are roughly 2.8 kb in size (Borah & Dasgupta 2012). Bipartite begomoviruses, namely MYMIV, MYMV and horsegram yellow mosaic virus (HgYMV), are accepted as causal agents of MYMD in different regions of the world (Qazi et al 2007;Malathi & John 2008a;Ilyas et al 2010).…”

“…MYMIV occurs in Northern India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, while MYMV is confined to Thailand, Vietnam, and Peninsular region of India (Ilyas, Qazi, Mansoor, & Briddon, 2010;Islam et al, 2012;Shahid et al, 2012;Tsai et al, 2013). HgYMV occurs only in South India (Borah & Dasgupta, 2012;Varma & Malathi, 2003). Enzyme immunoassays, ISEM, nucleic acid hybridization, and PCR-based tests were employed for the detection of begomoviruses associated with YMD of mungbean and urdbean (Malathi & John, 2008).…”
