Becoming the Standard: Expanding the Conventional Use of Interventional Embolization for Ruptured Pulmonary Artery Aneurysms

Abstract: Behcet’s disease is inflammatory vasculitis that has a high incidence of mortality in patients with pulmonary artery aneurysm (PAA) formation. Traditionally, patients with Behcet’s disease and PAA rupture undergo invasive surgical management. Surgical intervention; however, has been shown to have high complication, failure, and mortality rates. It has become a more contemporary practice to utilize the interventional embolization of pulmonary artery aneurysms (PAAs) in patients with Behcet’s disease and other v… Show more

“…HSS is a rare cardiovascular variant of Bechet disease, with only 57 cases reported 1 . Relatively low-risk interventional procedures, such as vascular embolization using glue or metallic coils, are increasingly being used to prevent or manage the sometimes unpredictable airway bleeding in HSS 1,2 …”

“…Various techniques have been utilized by interventional radiologists for the embolization of vascular pulmonary lesions in patients with rare diseases, such as the embolization of pulmonary artery aneurysms in Behcet's syndrome [5]. Similar techniques are employed with transcatheter embolization as the treatment of choice for pulmonary AVMs in all adults and symptomatic children with OWR syndrome, as short-and long-term data have proven it to be effective and safe [4].…”

“…3 Now, a new version of the Azur Hydrocoil, the Azur CX Peripheral Coil System (Fig 1a) has been used for small vessel embolisation. [4][5][6] The Azur CX coil is made of a platinum alloy with an inner hydrogel core and has 3D Spherical Shape. The coil is available in a detachable delivery form, in 0.018″ and 0.035″ wire diameters with variable diameter loops (2-20 mm) and lengths (2-40 cm).…”
