Bearings-Only Target Motion Analysis via Instrumental Variable Estimation

Abstract: This paper deals with the instrumental variable (IV) estimation for the problem of target motion analysis from bearingonly measurements (BO-TMA). By taking asymptotical analysis of the IV estimation, a systematic method for developing consistent IV estimate and the sufficient condition for its asymptotical normality are proposed. The asymptotical covariance of IV estimate is also derived explicitly which can be used to evaluate its performance. These results generalize the previous studies and enhance the appl… Show more

“…PL estimation has the advantage of being in closed form and of easy computation; however it can lead to severe bias even in favorable conditions [9]. Consequently IV estimation, yielding estimates with reduced bias, has seen recent attention [15], [10], [9], [11], [28].…”

“…Despite the large bias over the initial period, the performance of the IV-PL estimator with a large observation set is well acknowledged by the community, and a lot of research studies have focused on this batch algorithm to solve the bearings-only target tracking problem [1], [2], [6], [8]. What is the most attractive reason is its closed form solution, which also means less computational cost.…”
