Structures designed with reinforced concrete beams are used extensively in construction projects because of their functional and economic features. In this research, tested concrete beams were cast and reinforced with small diameter steel pipes and /or steel bars as flexural reinforcement to study the effect of this configuration of reinforcement on the structural behavior of reinforced concrete beams. The idea of this research involves performing and testing of four reinforced concrete beams reinforced by small diameter steel pipes with different percentages of replacement with traditional steel bars (0%, 33%, 66% and 100%). The experimental results showed that using of steel pipes reduces the flexural capacity by (2.7, 18.3, 37.5%) if compared with traditional steel bar according to the replacement percentages of (33%, 66%, and 100%) respectively. Moreover, the stiffness of beams reinforced with steel pipes (fully or partially) decreased as a result of the difference in the mechanical properties between steel bar and the steel pipe and also, the bond strength reduction between the smooth steel pipe and surrounded concrete.

“…The obtained deflection results have been compared with other experimental and FE model results in which using concrete element 100 9 42.5 9 42.5 mm, smeared steel distribution, and modeling CFRP with ANSYS 5 program and the results of studied parameters such as the maximum strains values for concrete and steel at failure loads for different opening sizes are very close. The prediction equations of torsional strength and failure mode of reinforced concrete beams with or without a small transverse opening based on the skew bending model were developed by Hasnat and Akhtanizzamam (1987). The ratio between top and bottom longitudinal reinforcement, the torsion-moment ratio, and the moment-shear ratio are main parameters.…”

The use of externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets, strips or steel plates is a modern and convenient way for strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Several researches have been carried out on reinforced concrete beams with web openings that strengthened using fiber reinforced polymer composite. Majority of researches focused on shear strengthening compared with flexural strengthening, while others studied the effect of openings on shear and flexural separately with various loading. This paper investigates the impact of more than sixty articles on opening reinforced concrete beams with and without strengthening by fiber reinforcement polymers FRP. Moreover, important practical issues, which are contributed in shear strengthening of beams with different strengthening techniques, such as steel plate and FRP laminate, and detailed with various design approaches are discussed. Furthermore, a simple technique of applying fiber reinforced polymer contributed with steel plate for strengthening the RC beams with openings under different load application is concluded. Directions for future research based on the existing gaps of the present works are presented.

In this paper, the effect of using Strain-Hardening Cementitious Composites (SHCC) to improve the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with web openings was experimentally investigated. A four-point bending test was performed on seven specimens. One of them, control beam BC, had no web opening, but the other six specimens were tested with web opening. The studied parameters were the effect of employing either plain or reinforced prefabricated SHCC and the influence of prefabricated SHCC configurations around web openings. On the basis of cracking patterns, load-deflection behavior, ductility, and initial stiffness, the shear behavior was evaluated. According to experimental findings, the presence of a web circular opening in the shear zone decreased the shear strength by about 46%. Nevertheless, the use of prefabricated SHCC shapes enhanced the shear strength of the tested specimens by up to 60% relative to the control specimen (BC-C). As soon as reinforcements were added to prefabricated SHCC, it was abundantly clear that the ultimate load and cracking behavior of RC beams with openings had improved.
