Battery characterization for wireless sensor network applications to investigate the effect of load on surface temperatures

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are commonly used in remote environments for monitoring and sensing. These devices are typically powered by batteries, the performance of which varies depending on environmental (such as temperature and humidity) as well as operational conditions (discharge rate and state-of-charge, SOC). As a result, assessing their technical viability for WSN applications requires performance evaluation based on the aforementioned stimuli. This paper proposes an efficient method for examining b… Show more

“…Replacing the batteries after a certain period may be considered but is not always appropriate. In fact, the cost of exchanging batteries in hundreds of devices, especially if they are in hard-to-reach or hazardous locations, can make the entire network deployment cost-prohibitive [2].…”

“…e power unit is the SN's primary energy source, and it is typically powered by batteries such as lithium-ion (Li-ion), lithium-polymer (LiPo), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), and alkaline [28,29]. e capacities, voltages, advantages, and disadvantages of the various types of batteries (see Table 1) used in energy-e cient WSN applications have gained attention since batteries are the heart of wireless sensor nodes.…”
