The random variation of bandwidth in wireless networks causes some significant challenges to the congestion control protocols based on bandwidth estimation. In this paper, a wireless congestion control scheme based on extended Kalman filtering and bandwidth (CSEKB) is proposed. The CSEKB can effectively perceive the bandwidth oscillation of wireless networks and distinguish the type of packet loss by establishing a noise perception factor. According to the congestion factor, the congestion control parameters are adjusted to correspondingly improve the performance of the wireless network. Moreover, the variation trend of the size of the congestion window presents a law of similar normal distribution curve, which has a certain degree of local symmetry. The CSEKB was implemented in Network simulator 3 (NS3) and compared with TCP Westwood (TCPW), CUBIC, and extended Kalman filtering-based bandwidth estimation (EBE). Through extensive simulation studies, the proposed CSEKB demonstrated the significant performance in wireless networks. First, the CSEKB can achieve congestion control based on the accurate prediction of available bandwidth, and improve average throughput and link utilization. In addition, the CSEKB has good fairness and friendliness compared with several other well-known congestion control methods.

The imminent wireless technologies are demanding fusion of several networks with diverse technologies. A convenient user device for such an environment is the multihomed host, which is capable of making use of simultaneous multiple connections of heterogeneous networks and smartly distributing/receiving data among them. The aim of this work is to develop a mechanism for assessing the multihoming concept and to propose a system model for increasing its applicability. The proposed model provided a novel user-centric scheme for multihoming for multi-radio access technologies (multi-RAT). It is considered an evolution of traffic offloading for gaining more capacity, higher data rates, and real-time services. This work assumes data classifications, evaluates and ranks the available connections, and utilizes the application data in an unequal load balance scheme. This is achieved by analyzing the performance of three of the most widely used alternative-choice for multiple attributes decision making (MADM) methods. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP), along with a utility equation, is applied to the system model for unequal load balance solution. The proposed model is targeting an energy efficient mechanism which satisfies application needs. Moreover, it reveals an efficient transmission mechanism for a better quality of service, traffic management, and availability solutions. The simulation results show that the proposed system surpassed its former counterparts.

A QoE Evaluation Method for RT-HDMV Based on Multipath Relay Service

Multipath diversity leads to a possible higher performance for real-time high definition video, especially for medical video transmission, which would improve the stability of multiple transmission paths in the symmetrical state, and avoid the potential losses of imaging information in the communication process. Most of the previous works are always based on the single-path end-to-end transmission, although the service had been demonstrated that it is unable to meet the rigorous demand for the RT-HDMV. In the paper, a multipath relay service based on the QoE (quality of experience) evaluation method is proposed for the RT-HDMV (real-time high definition medical video). The method eliminates several of the limitations in the existing methods for some conventional single-path transmission. It can fully utilize the finite network resources and transmission bandwidth to meet the users’ demands of the RT-HDMV to get a better score of the QoE. We use a four-stage framework to evaluate the QoE, which consists of constructing the multipath relay transmission for the RT-HDMV, calculating the weights of diversified QoS parameters in the multipath, designing the load distribution strategy by the mapping between the QoS (quality of service) and QoE, and redefining the rule of the QoE evaluation. Many experiments show that the proposed design scheme achieves weighting of the transmission sub-paths and computes the QoE score. Compared with the state-of-art methods in the single path transmission scene, our framework mainly gains the excellent performance for the RT-HDMV.
