Basil, tea tree and clove essential oils as analgesics and anaesthetics in Amphiprion clarkii (Bennett, 1830)

Abstract: In this study were evaluated the anaesthesia and analgesic effects of clove Eugenia caryophyllata, tea tree Melaleuca alternifolia and basil Ocimum basilicum essential oils (EO) during handling of yellowtail clownfish Amphiprion clarkii. Juveniles (3.70 ± 0.75 cm and 1.03 ± 0.50 g; mean ± standard deviation) were submitted to concentrations of tea tree oils (n=10/concentration), previously defined in pilot tests. Individually and only once, fish from each treatment were placed in a glass recipient containing 1… Show more

“…Previous studies revealed that some herbal essential oils such as Lippia sidoides and Ocimum basilicum, could be inappropriate for fish, because of the side effects such as sudden jumping behavior, high loss of mucus, involuntary muscle contraction and mortality (Silva et al, 2013;Correia et al, 2018). It was also reported that L. sidoides essential oil with 300 µl/L achieved anesthesia, but recovery time exceeded 30 min.…”

“…Many studies have been carried out on various herbal essential oils as anesthetic agents such as Lippia alba, Hesperozygis ringens, Lippia sidoides, Ocotea acutifolia, Cinnamomum camphora, Mentha arvensis, Aloysia triphylla, Cymbopogon flexuosus, Matricaria chamomilla, Origanum sp., Eucalyptus sp., Melaleuca alternifolia, Pelargonium graveolens and Aniba rosaedora (Cunha et al, 2010;Silva et al, 2013;Pedrazzani and Neto, 2016;Santos et al, 2017;Can et al, 2017;Bodur et al, 2018;Correia et al, 2018;Can et al, 2018;Kizak et al, 2018).…”

“…Native plants are commonly evaluated by researchers, as is the case of tea tree alternifolia, its therapeutic compound is commonly called "Tea tree oil" (TTO). Its oil is characterized by a yellow color and is a compound of terpene hydrocarbons, thus being monoterpenes (Hydrocarbons formed by two isopropene units, either in a circle or branched) or Sesquiterpene (They have three isopropene units) and also their constituent alcohols (CORREIA et al, 2018). One of the main active sources of biological reproduction of the therapeutic mediator "In vitro" and "In vivo" is (terpinmem-4ol), a monoterpene, thus presenting itself as a primordial factor for oil production, and studies show antifungal and antibacterial capabilities ( FELIPE et al, 2018).…”
