Baseline susceptibility of Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in Australia to spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole and dinotefuran, with reference to pyriproxyfen cross‐resistance

Abstract: Silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) Middle East‐Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1), previously known as B biotype, is an agricultural pest of global significance and has developed resistance to many commonly used insecticides. Toxicity of spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole and dinotefuran to B. tabaci MEAM1 populations from eastern Australia was determined by laboratory bioassay, using either a foliar leaf dip or systemic uptake methodology. All field‐collected populations tested were susceptible to spirotetramat (… Show more

“…Other research (mentioned below) partially overlap with our study's low LC50 and resistance ratios. Hopkinson & Pumpa (2019) reported the susceptibility status of B. tabaci populations to spirotetramat ranged from 2.80 to 5.98 mg a.i./l with a 2.1 times difference. Prabhaker et al (2014) determined the susceptibility status of B. tabaci in Arizona and California to spirotetramat.…”

“…There were studies conducted on determination of the resistance of B. tabaci to cyantraniliprole, spirotetramat and pyriproxyfen in a number of countries. Hopkinson & Pumpa (2019) studied the toxicity of spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole and dinotefuran to Australian B. tabaci MEAM1 populations. Gravalos et al (2015) investigated the resistance and cross-resistance of B. tabaci Mediterranean strains collected from Greece, Italy and Spain to cyantraniliprole.…”

“…However, the researcher continued to pursue a wide range of polar groups on the anthranilic core with an emphasis on nitrile substitution ( Barrania, 2019 ; Bolzan et al, 2019 ; Carscallen et al, 2019 ; Mao et al, 2019 ; Gao et al, 2019 ; Meng et al, 2019 ; O'Neal et al, 2019 ; Sharma et al, 2019 ; Sreedhar, 2019 ; Truong and Pessah, 2019 ; Jiang et al, 2020 ). This effort resulted in the discovery of cyantraniliprole, a second product candidate in this chemical class possessing excellent interspectral activity against a range of insect orders, including lepidopteran and hemipteran pests ( Hopkinson and Pumpa, 2019 ; Plata-Rueda et al, 2019 ; Ran et al, 2019 ; Zhang et al, 2019 ). This insecticide product exhibits a very low toxicity to vertebrates and non-target organisms.…”

“…B. tabaci is a major pest of Australian vegetable crops and cotton (Gunning 1995; Subramaniam 2010; Hall et al . 2012; Hopkinson & Pumpa 2019) and a minor pest of summer grains and oilseed crops (Sequeira et al . 2009).…”

“…In contrast, all other species have cosmopolitan distributions. B. tabaci is a major pest of Australian vegetable crops and cotton (Gunning 1995;Subramaniam 2010;Hall et al 2012;Hopkinson & Pumpa 2019) and a minor pest of summer grains and oilseed crops (Sequeira et al 2009). F. occidentalis is a pest in vegetable, ornamental, cotton, fruit and legume crops in Australia (Herron & Gullick 2001 (Kay 1977;Gunning et al 1984;Glenn et al 1994;Bird 2015;Downes et al 2016;Bird et al 2017).…”
