“…Among the H. pylorinegative subjects in this study, there was a considerable difference in acid secretory capacity between men and women; acid secretion in women is 56% of that in men. The difference in acid secretion according to gender has been reported in a number of earlier papers, before the recognition of H. pylori, on the study of Western control subjects (21)(22)(23) and Japanese subjects (16). In this study population, there was a substantial difference in mean body weight between men and women (66 AE 10 kg, 54 AE 9 kg, respectively).…”

“…Gender is another variable suggested as important in gastric acid secretion (21,22). Most previous studies have reported higher gastric acid secretion in men than in women, which was ascribed to the variation in gastric surface area (23) or the difference in parietal cell sensitivity to gastrin (24).…”

“…Actually, ESCC developed even in some patients of the present study who were H. pylori-negative and entirely healthy stomach. This observation is in contrast with cases of non-cardiac gastric cancer, in which H. pylori infection is a prerequisite condition and the gastric hyposecretion concomitant with fundic gastritis and/or atrophy was found in the vast majority of such patients [22,44,45]. Obviously, since ESCC is a multi-factorial disease, one could consider profound hypochlorhydria, a newly identified risk factor for ESCC in this study, as one of the important risk factors in conjunction with other carcinogenic factors.…”

“…Taking into account previous reports [22,36,44,45], profound hypochlorhydria seems to be a common risk factor for the development of neoplasia throughout the upper gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the stomach in humans, except for a small region around the gastro-esophageal junction. Unlike cases of ESCC and non-cardiac gastric cancer, preservation of gastric acid secretion is important for the development of gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma including Barrett's cancer [45,46].…”

“…As histamine is, physiologically, the main secretagogue for acid secretion by gastric parietal cells, our results may explain the mechanism of the enhancing effect of IL-8 on gastric acid secretion that was demonstrated by our previous study. 8 The importance of the results of the present study seem to be that it may explain the mechanism for the increase in acid secretion in patients with active gastritis, because IL-8 production by the gastric mucosa is increased in active gastritis caused by infection with Helicobacter pylori, 2 and patients with duodenal ulcer (DU), who generally have antral gastritis, 15 also have high levels of acid secretion 16 and increased sensitivity to stimulation of acid secretion by gastrin. 17 Furthermore, most DU patients are infected with H. pylori.…”
