Barriers and facilitators to preventing pressure ulcers in nursing home residents: A qualitative analysis informed by the Theoretical Domains Framework

Abstract: Pressure ulcer prevention in nursing home residents is complex and is influenced by several factors. The findings will inform a theory and evidence-based intervention to aid the prevention of pressure ulcers in nursing home settings.

“…6 In particular, preventive nursing care is considered vital because PU prevention is mostly achievable through preventive nursing care. 7 Specifically, nurses can play the most important role in assessing PU risk factors: when patients are admitted into long-term care facilities, nurses observe the injury-prone area in order to identify the preventive early stage and then implement preventive nursing care. 8,9 This care should be performed on the basis of substantial nursing knowledge on PU because tailored nursing care can be provided for PU prevention once a PU is precisely assessed by nurses with extensive knowledge of PUs.…”

“…The latter can be subdivided into expectations about the likelihood that a patient will develop IAD (perceived probability) and expectations about the severity of IAD (perceived hazardousness). To illustrate, in previous research, nurses seemed more motivated to prevent the development of pressure ulcers if they were aware of the serious consequences associated with pressure ulcers (eg, serious pain for the patient) . Furthermore, outcome expectancies may interact with each other .…”

“…It should be interesting to study the relationship between the score on the APrIAD and the performance of IAD prevention. While developing such a study, it is important to consider that IAD prevention can also be influenced by other variables, such as knowledge, self‐efficacy, staffing level, work load, product availability, job satisfaction, other priorities, and presence of universal guidelines . Evidence on the association between the score on the APrIAD and IAD prevention will benefit the construct validity of the APrIAD.…”
