Barrier properties in hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber compounds containing organoclays and perfluoropolyether additives

Abstract: Elastomeric compounds from hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, organomodified clay, and perfluoropolyether (PFPE) additives were prepared. Characterization of the materials included X-ray diffraction, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile mechanical properties testing, environmental scanning electron microscopy, and solvent permeability measurements, from which the solubility coefficient (S) and diffusion coefficient (D) values were determined. A synergistic effect of the two additives was observ… Show more

“…A synergistic effect of organo-clay and perfluoropolyether in reducing the solvent permeability of HNBR has been reported. This was realized by reducing the diffusion coefficient of clay and decreasing the solubility coefficient of perfluoropolyether [332]. In a BIMSM matrix, it was demonstrated that the addition of CB largely enhanced the tortuosity by the joining of CB and OMMT, resulting in improved barrier properties [333].…”

“…[26][27][28][29] Moreover due to their high durability and toughness and their peculiar surface properties, UV-cured PFPE coatings are very interesting candidates for developing high-performance protective systems for different materials. The water permeability of coatings containing PFPE is generally low (good barrier behavior) [30][31][32][33] due to the extreme hydrophobicity of the fl uorinated chain and its very low glass transition temperature.…”

“…Fluoroelastomer (FKM) is a type of elastomer that shows excellent performance when high temperatures and chemical resistance are required (Ameduri et al, 2001). These materials are proposed for applications where elastic behavior is needed for severe environments demanding special improved material performance such as high-temperature stability and oil resistance (Valsecchi et al, 2011).…”
