UV Curing of Perfluoropolyether Oligomers Containing Graphene Nanosheets to Enhance Water‐Vapor Barrier Properties

Abstract: Recently, graphene and its derivative nanosheets have been considered as potential candidates for gas barrier membranes. Here, the effect on the water-vapor barrier properties of incorporating graphene nanoplatelets into a UV-curable perfl uoropolyether methacrylic oligo mer is investigated. By combining the hydrophobicity of the highly fl uorinated polymer with the tortuous path induced by the graphene sheets, the barrier properties of the crosslinked fi lms are further enhanced, acting both on the thermodyna… Show more

“…In order to better characterize our intermediate molds, we evaluated their wettability by performing water contact angle measurements. The contact angle was 93 ± 5°, which was in line with what was reported by other authors for PFPE substrates [ 26 ].…”

“…In the field of polymers, they have been proposed to make functional materials by incorporating them into polymeric matrices. In addition, inserting graphene nanoplatelets into UV-curable perfluoropolyether methacrylic oligomers was investigated to achieve gas barrier properties . By combining the hydrophobicity of the highly fluorinated photopolymer with the tortuous path induced by the graphene sheets, the barrier properties of the cross-linked films were enhanced.…”

“…By combining the hydrophobicity of the highly fluorinated photopolymer with the tortuous path induced by the graphene sheets, the barrier properties of the cross-linked films were enhanced. Acting both on the thermodynamic (low solubility) and kinetics (longer diffusion path) contributions of the water-vapor diffusion through the polymeric films, the permeability was halved in the presence of only 0.3 wt % graphene …”

“…In fact, the existence of polarity in the partially fluorinated polymers strongly influences the interfacial properties, leading to a reduction of adhesion and friction, to a good protection against corrosion, environmental pollution, weather aggression and graffiti: all peculiar coating characteristics [17][18][19].…”
