“…In the past few years, the incidence and severity of AR in developed countries has gradually increased and AR has become a serious public health problem (4,31). Although some progress has been made in the treatment of AR, the therapeutic effect is still unsatisfactory (5)(6)(7)(8). Therefore, finding new and effective methods and targets for the treatment of AR is essential.…”

“…There are several commonly used AR treatments, including intranasal steroids, antihistamines, leukotriene receptor antagonists and immunotherapy (5,6). However, patients with AR always have unsatisfactory results (7). It is therefore necessary to assess novel and effective AR treatments (8).…”

“…The utility of these measures is also supported by recent data suggesting that the epithelium with its tight junctions is considered tight under normal conditions but it can be abnormally permeable, with a decreased presence of tight junctions, in pathogenic conditions (the “hyperpermeability hypothesis”), as allergic rhinitis [ 9 , 11 13 ] or rhinosinusitis [ 14 , 15 ], or also in contact with high levels of contamination (such as traffic-related air pollutants) [ 16 ]. Since epithelial barrier defects are linked with chronicity and severity of airway inflammation, restoring the barrier integrity may become a useful approach in the treatment of allergic diseases [ 13 ].…”
