Baroreflex control of lumbar and renal sympathetic nerve activity in conscious rats

Abstract: Kanbar R, Chapuis B, Oréa V, Barrès C, Julien C. Baroreflex control of lumbar and renal sympathetic nerve activity in conscious rats. Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol 295: R8 -R14, 2008. First published April 30, 2008 doi:10.1152/ajpregu.00147.2008This study compared the baroreflex control of lumbar and renal sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) in conscious rats. Arterial pressure (AP) and lumbar and renal SNA were simultaneously recorded in six freely behaving rats. Pharmacological estimates of lumbar and… Show more

“…To evaluate the degree of hypertension, intra-arterial blood pressure was measured in conscious, unrestrained rats, as previously described (13). The catheterization procedure was performed in five SHRs at the age of 64 Ϯ 2 wk and in all four WKY rats at the age of 68 wk.…”

“…The lumbar sympathetic chain contains axons of both pre-and postganglionic sympathetic neurons. However, this is probably inconsequential because first the proportion of pre-ganglionic axons is low (less than 10%; Scislo et al 1998;Kanbar et al 2008), and second it is quite likely that pre-ganglionic signals are transmitted through sympathetic ganglia with little modification (McLachlan 2003). The splanchnic nerve contains post-ganglionic axons supplying the splanchnic circulation as well as glands and muscle in the gut.…”

“…The study also brings additional support to the view that changes in the characteristics of the sympathetic baroreflex might accompany changes in the behavioural state. To examine further this question in animals, it might be advisable to use a spontaneous index of sympathetic baroreflex gain that shows a better temporal resolution than the pharmacological method and can be calculated during the performance of common behaviours [21,24]. Furthermore, owing to the recent development of a radiotelemetric method for RSNA recording in rabbits [25], the relationship between RSNA baroreflex gain and BP variability could be assessed over long periods of time with minimal disturbance to the animals.…”
