Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty in patients with Congenital Valvular Pulmonary Stenosis

Abstract: Background Congenital valvular pulmonary stenosis (PS) accounts for most of the etiology of PS, and constitutes about 5 to 10% of all congenital heart disease. Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty has become the choice of treatment for valvular PS since the first series reported by Kan et al in 19824 and has almost replaced surgical valvotomy in pediatric patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate results of balloon valvuloplasty in patients with congenital valvular pulmonary stenosis. Met… Show more

“…4 The Inoue balloon reportedly improves hemodynamics; however, it is compliant, and it loses its hourglass shape during maximal inf lation, which places the PV annulus, the STJ, and the leaf lets at risk of rupture. 7,8,[10][11][12] Moreover, it can be difficult to manipulate.…”

“…In our study there were no serious complications such as severe pulmonary regurgitation or annular laceration. Complications are common when balloon to annulus ratio exceeds 30% 14 . However, in our study we used a balloon size about 25% greater than the annulus diameter.…”

“…En nuestro estudio se describe un 10% de complicaciones, considerando que se incluyen 21 pacientes entre neonatos y menores de un año, siendo este grupo con menor peso para realizar dicho procedimiento. Como se reporta en múltiples series, las complicaciones son más frecuentes cuando excede el tamaño de balón utilizado sobre el anillo pulmonar en un 30% (24) . Ahmed et al en 2021 no encontraron complicaciones en el 82,4% de pacientes (6) .…”
