Ballistic Impact: Recent Advances in Analytical Modeling of Plate Penetration Dynamics–A Review

Abstract: This review covers studies dealing with simplified analytical models for ballistic penetration of an impactor into different solid media, namely, metals, soil, concrete, and composites at high speeds, but not at hypervelocities. The overview covers mainly papers that were published in the last decade, but not analyzed in previous reviews on impact dynamics. Both mathematical models and their engineering applications are considered. The review covers 280 citations.

“…Such models would be difficult to validate in the absence of a reliable method to measure jacket thickness variations nondestructively, both before and after impact. Present analytical models [3], [4], [5], [6], [7] and [8] consider only the gross geometry of bullets and make unjustified assumptions about the consistency and symmetry of the projectile and its casing. As such, a robust way to test correlation between ballistic performance and jacket thickness variation is desirable for the development of accurate numerical simulations.…”

“…Современные аналитические обзорные работы по проблеме удара и проникания [15][16][17] свидетельствуют о широком распространении модификаций модели локального взаи-модействия (МЛВ). В соответствии с одной из реализаций МЛВ давление в каждой точке боковой поверхности ударника отождествляется с давлением на внутренней поверхности сферической или цилиндрической полости, расширяющейся в безграничной среде от ну-левого радиуса до радиуса ударника («Cavity Expansion Model» в зарубежной литературе).…”

“…Dedicated surveys by Thompson and Mitchell [1]; Adeli et al [2]; Heuzé [3] are devoted to engineering models describing penetration into geological media. Papers and surveys by Backman and Goldsmith [4]; Brown [5]; Corbett et al [6]; Wen and Xu [7]; Ben Dor et al [8] and monographs by Bulson [9]; Carlucci and Jacobson [10]; Bangash [11]; Szuladziñski [12]; Seah et al [13] summarize some of the results obtained in the field. It must be emphasized that previously published overviews cover only a part of known analytical models and do not include the models suggested during the last decade and the models not published in English.…”
