Balancing the Need for Reliability and Time Efficiency: Short Forms of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III

Abstract: Tables permitting the conversion of short-form composite scores to full-scale IQ estimates have been published for previous editions of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). Equivalent tables are now needed for selected subtests of the WAIS-III. This article used Tellegen and Briggs's formulae to convert the sum of scaled scores for four selected WAIS-III short-form combinations into full-scale IQ estimates. Conversion tables providing full-scale IQ estimates across all age groups from the sum of scale… Show more

“…Subjects in the adult group were administered the same subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-III; Wechsler, 1997). Mean reliability and validity of this estimated IQ-score compared to the complete IQ-test has been reported to be .9 for both scales (Jeyakumar et al, 2004;Spreen and Strauss, 1998). The mean IQ-score was 95.0 (SD 11.0) in the adolescent group and 102.2 (SD 12.4) in the adult group.…”

“…Additionally, the Block Design and Vocabulary Subtests from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales (WAIS-III) (Nascimento, 2004) were used to estimate participant intelligence quotient (IQ) based on the values provided by (Jeyakumar, Warriner, Raval, & Ahmad, 2004).…”

“…When these were not available, subjects were administered a shortened version of the WAIS-III, in which IQ was based on the subtests Block Design and Vocabulary (Jeyakumar, Warriner, Raval, & Ahmad, 2004). The WAIS-III Picture Arrangement subtest was used as a measure of social logical reasoning.…”
