Adaptive learning through learning software represents an innovative teaching approach that employs digital media to tailor educational content and materials to the needs, abilities and learning pace of each individual. This study analyzes the impact of implementing an adaptive digital learning platform in terms of students' perceptions of the user experience and learning outcomes in a school context. Three distinct learning modules on the subjects of `polar bear`, `heat transport` and `temperature and heat`, pertaining to the field of bionics, were completed by the students on an adaptive digital learning platform during a science lesson. The study analyzed data from a total of 56 sixth-grade students from two German grammar schools. Questionnaires and performance tests were administered at various stages during the completion of the learning modules on the platform. The questionnaires covered a range of aspects including motivation, use of digital media, time spent with digital media, and media used. In addition, students' learning success through the learning platform, cognitive activation, and situational interest were investigated. Performance tests were used to determine prior knowledge and understanding of the content of the bionics modules before and during use of the learning platform. The results indicate that digital media, particularly learning software has a motivating effect on almost all students in the class (98%). Furthermore, 80% of students prefer a mix of traditional teaching methods and digital media, reflecting a preference for a hybrid learning environment. The emotional response to the digital learning platform was predominantly positive (62%), but 38% of learners reported feeling uncertain when using the digital learning environment. A performance test analysis revealed that the greatest learning gain between the pre- and post1-performance tests was observed in the `polar bear` module, with a learning gain of over 40%. This was followed by a learning gain of over 20% for the `heat transport` module and 13% for the `temperature and heat` module. In conclusion, the digital learning platform has the potential to significantly enhance learning and activate cognitive processes based on student motivation and situational interest, provided that the subject matter is appropriate.

Technological developments and the pandemic have popularized the distance learning model at universities. In this educational model, students spend more time in front of screens, and screen‐related health conditions have become important. This cross‐sectional study of 177 undergraduate students was designed to investigate the effect of block and traditional scheduling in online distance education (ODE) on their musculoskeletal pain and to investigate their perceptions of block scheduling. A two‐stage method was used: a quantitative design to compare pain levels, and a qualitative design to determine the students' perceptions of block scheduling using an online survey. Pain intensity was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS‐11). Data were collected in the university health sciences department. Pain intensity following the block and traditional lessons was analyzed using a paired t‐test. Students in the block schedule had significantly more pain, with a large effect size on the whole trunk and upper limbs. Pain levels were also clinically meaningful for the upper (5.73 ± 2.75), lower (5.59 ± 2.87), and neck (4.92 ± 2.60) regions. Students reported positive experiences with block scheduling in ODE such as saving time (43%) and maintaining subject integrity (26%), but also negative experiences such as distraction (56%), fatigue (33%), pain (17%), and boredom (11%). Block scheduling in ODE could cause clinically significant neck and back pain. In distance learning, keeping the course duration short and ensuring student mobility in the classroom are important.

As schools go digital, the use of tablet computers is increasing. Concerns are raised that the extensive use of tablets and the associated bent-over posture may negatively affect the individual’s health. In order to analyse the possible effects of prolonged tablet use on physical health, a detailed analysis of the posture during tablet use is needed so that appropriate preventive measures can be taken to prevent degenerative changes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to measure and report the posture of 56 students while working with a tablet computer and compare it with an upright posture. Sagittal and frontal images were used for measurements of the subjects’ postures while seated, using the tablet, and in a neutral sitting position looking straight ahead. The body position during tablet use was recorded in two different user configurations: tablet flat on the table and tablet in individual freely chosen user configuration. After appropriate annotation of the data, the following parameters were evaluated in different planes. The craniovertebral angle (CVA), head tilt angle (HTA), and forward shoulder angle (FSA) are measurements that describe the extent to which the head bends forward and downward and how the shoulders are aligned in the sagittal plane. On the other hand, the head shoulder angle (HSA), lateral head tilt angle (LHTA), and trunk flexion angle (TFA) are angles measured in the frontal plane, which indicate the degree of head tilt and trunk bending to the right or left side. The measurement results clearly showed that the use of a tablet had a pronounced effect on the positions and rotations of the participants’ head, neck, and shoulders. This was evident through strong deviations observed in the angles measured between the sitting straight posture and the postures while using the tablet. For example, depending on the body posture class, the mean CVA values were 45.76° for straight sitting posture, 28.25° for holding the tablet individually posture, and 26.04° for the posture adopted while using a tablet placed flat on the table.
