Bad News Has Wings: Dread Risk Mediates Social Amplification in Risk Communication

Abstract: Social diffusion of information amplifies risk through processes of birth, death, and distortion of message content. Dread risk-involving uncontrollable, fatal, involuntary, and catastrophic outcomes (e.g., terrorist attacks and nuclear accidents)-may be particularly susceptible to amplification because of the psychological biases inherent in dread risk avoidance. To test this, initially balanced information about high or low dread topics was given to a set of individuals who then communicated this information… Show more

“…Interpreting near‐misses as disasters that almost happened can increase judged risk and willingness to enact risk‐reduction behavior (Dillon, Tinsley, & Burns, ; Tinsley, Dillon, & Cronin, ). Dread was an element in one of two underlying dimensions (the other being knowledge) in the psychometric approach to perceived risk (Slovic, ), and drives an affect heuristic (Slovic & Peters, ) that can increase transmission of negative messages in social networks (Jagiello & Hills, ). Likelihood is another occasional measure of risk perception (Wilson et al., ).…”

“…In this environment, information that is better at being received, remembered, 506 and reproduced has a selective advantage (Hills, 2019). Though this mechanism applies to all 507 information, it may be especially true of prominent risks, which may self-reinforce their negativity more 508 rapidly via enhanced social communication (Jagiello & Hills, 2018).…”

“…Without longitudinal studies, this will be difficult, which implies the need to continue to be openminded about the relationship between perceptions of climate change, trust, and risk mitigation options. Indeed, it is fair to observe that the last decade has produced risk perception and communication research that led to counterintuitive findings that should be considered by decisionmakers (Dillon, Tinsley, & Cronin, 2011;Jagiello & Hills, 2018;Jensen et al, 2017;Suzuki, 2014).…”
